Why This Rejection Occurs
These rejections are indicating that the Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) and name control for the primary taxpayer, the spouse, or one of their dependents does not match the Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) and name control in the IRS e-File database.
Relevant Types of Taxpayer Identification Numbers
- Social Security number (SSN)
- Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN)
- Taxpayer Identification Number for Pending U.S. Adoptions (ATIN)
You can find the last four digits of the affected individual's Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) in the “Additional Information” section at the bottom of the rejection.

How to Resolve This Rejection
- Review the name and Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) that was entered into the software for this individual.
- If their information is incorrect, update this individual's Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) and name and then resubmit their return.

If their information is correct, these rejections are indicating that the IRS database contains a different Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) and name control for this individual.
- The IRS database is built using information from the Social Security Administration. If there is a problem with the information in the IRS database, there is a problem with the information held by the Social Security Administration.
- Individuals can reach out to the Social Security Administration to correct any errors in their records by calling 1-800-772-1213.
- You can resubmit this return once their records are corrected and sent to the IRS.
- If their records cannot be corrected and sent to the IRS, the taxpayer will need to mail their return with a brief explanation.
